.NET at a glance
.NET is Microsoft's cross-platform development platform and runtime, under many server applications and services. Microsoft ships annual major versions (alternating LTS and STS) plus monthly servicing updates that carry security fixes for the runtime and libraries.
For admins .NET is usually a runtime beneath an application. Apply the monthly servicing updates promptly — they patch the runtime, ASP.NET Core and libraries. Pick an LTS version for production and track its end-of-support date; STS versions have shorter lifecycles. Self-contained deployments bundle the runtime and must be rebuilt to pick up fixes, whereas framework-dependent apps benefit from a patched shared runtime — know which model you run. Test the application before moving a major .NET version. Keep container base images current.
