HashiCorp Vault at a glance

HashiCorp Vault is a widely used secrets-management and data-protection platform, storing and controlling access to credentials, keys and certificates. Vault ships regular releases; following the license change to the BUSL, the community fork OpenBao is a compatible alternative some evaluate.

For admins Vault is squarely security-critical — it holds the organization's secrets, so a flaw or misconfiguration is high-impact. Apply security releases promptly, plan version upgrades with the documented path (Vault upgrades are generally in-place but read the notes), and always back up (snapshot) the storage first. In HA and clustered setups, upgrade in the documented order. Keep Vault sealed at rest, tightly restrict access to the API and unseal keys, and audit access. After upgrading, verify auth methods, secret engines and unseal. Track the version and its support window; patchletter surfaces new Vault releases.
