Ladybird at a glance

Ladybird is an open-source web browser that spun off from the SerenityOS project and is developed by the non-profit Ladybird Browser Initiative. Unlike most modern browsers, it does not build on Chromium, Gecko, or WebKit but uses a completely from-scratch engine (LibWeb, LibJS). For sysadmins it is currently mainly a project to watch, since it is still under active pre-release development without an official stable version.

There are no regular versioned releases yet in the classic sense; interested users typically build the browser from source or use nightly builds. An official alpha release has been announced for Linux and macOS, with beta and later stable phases planned for subsequent years. Windows support is currently limited to running under WSL2.

Once the browser reaches broader rollout in organizational environments, admins should watch official release announcements and security advisories closely, since a brand-new engine can be expected to carry unknown vulnerabilities and see more frequent changes early on. Until the first official release, monitoring the GitHub repository remains the most reliable way to stay informed about progress and upcoming version releases.
