OpenWrt at a glance
OpenWrt is a popular open-source Linux firmware for routers and embedded network devices, giving them a full package system and long update life. OpenWrt ships stable releases plus security fixes; as firmware on a network-perimeter device, timely patching matters.
For admins the attention points are the release channel and the packages. Sysupgrade updates the firmware while optionally keeping configuration — back up the config first and confirm your device is supported by the target release. Never expose the web UI (LuCI) or SSH to the WAN. Packages have their own updates; keep them current, especially anything network-facing. After upgrading, verify firewall rules, VPN and connectivity. OpenWrt's long support life on older hardware is a real security benefit over abandoned vendor firmware. Track the release and its support status.
