OPNsense plugins extend the open-source OPNsense firewall with additional features — VPN clients, proxies, intrusion detection, dynamic DNS and more. Plugins are versioned and released alongside OPNsense core plus security fixes; as add-ons to a perimeter device, keeping them current and compatible matters.

For admins the key rule is that plugins are tied to the OPNsense core version — keep core and plugins in step, and check plugin compatibility before larger core upgrades, since a plugin is the usual upgrade stumbling block. Update plugins through the firmware UI, and back up the configuration first. Because plugins run on the firewall (a high-value perimeter device), keep only the ones you need, from the official repositories, and keep them patched.
