ownCloud gives sysadmins a self-hosted platform for file sharing, file synchronization and team collaboration – an alternative to public cloud services that keeps full data sovereignty inside your own data center. The modern "Infinite Scale" (oCIS) edition uses a cloud-native microservice architecture written in Go, while the classic ownCloud continues to run as a PHP application backed by a database.

Release behavior differs between the two lines: Infinite Scale ships as a single binary or container image on relatively short cycles, whereas classic ownCloud follows semantic versioning with major, minor and patch releases plus defined maintenance and LTS windows. Security and bugfix updates are published on a regular basis.

Before updating, administrators should read the release notes carefully, as they cover database migrations, changed minimum versions for desktop clients and PHP compatibility requirements. Taking backups beforehand, testing in a staging environment and moving through major versions step by step help avoid configuration and compatibility problems.
