PatchMon at a glance

PatchMon is an open-source, self-hosted platform that makes the patch level of a server fleet visible in one place. A lightweight agent runs on each host and reports pending packages, available security updates and a required reboot back to the server. The web interface groups this by host, package and urgency; the common Linux package managers are covered, as is FreeBSD.

The project lives on GitHub and publishes its levels as releases at a fairly short cadence. Server and agent belong on the same level, otherwise reports break off or stay incomplete.

When updating, the server comes first: release notes call out database migrations and changes to the agent interface, and the agents follow afterwards. Back up the database and configuration beforehand. Because the interface holds a complete picture of unpatched systems, it does not belong on the open internet — access behind an authenticating reverse proxy and an enabled two-factor login are appropriate.
