PowerShell 7 at a glance

PowerShell is Microsoft's cross-platform automation shell and scripting language, central to Windows administration. Microsoft ships the modern, open-source PowerShell (7.x) on regular release and LTS lines alongside the built-in Windows PowerShell 5.1; security and servicing updates arrive through those channels.

For admins the modern PowerShell installs and updates independently of Windows (winget, MSI, or the built-in updater) and runs side by side with 5.1 — plan which scripts target which. Keep it current for security and module compatibility, and pick an LTS line for stability. Execution policy, script signing and constrained language mode are the levers for safe scripting in sensitive environments. Modules from the Gallery carry their own supply-chain risk — vet and pin them. Track the support window of your PowerShell version.
