Safari at a glance
Safari is deeply tied into macOS: on the current macOS release a new Safari version normally arrives with the system update, while for the two preceding macOS versions Apple also ships it as a standalone Safari update. Watching only the macOS version therefore misses browser patches on a regular basis.
This matters because WebKit stays exposed like any browser engine — and because every browser on iOS and iPadOS runs on WebKit, a Safari flaw effectively affects all of them there. Apple documents the details in its security releases and explicitly flags issues that were already being exploited.
In managed environments MDM controls Safari's settings (extensions, certificates, downloads) while the update itself rides the system update channel. Applying it promptly is standard; manually catching up on older macOS versions is the gap that usually goes unnoticed.
