Syncthing at a glance

Syncthing is a popular open-source, peer-to-peer file-synchronization tool that keeps folders in sync across devices without a central server — a privacy-friendly, self-controlled alternative to cloud sync. Syncthing ships regular releases plus security fixes; as networked software syncing your files, keeping it current matters.

For admins Syncthing's model is decentralized and encrypted in transit, which is a security strength, but the web GUI must be protected — bind it locally or put it behind authentication, never exposed to the internet. Keep it current for protocol and security fixes; it can auto-upgrade. Device authorization (accepting device IDs) is the trust boundary — only pair devices you control. After updating, verify that folders sync and the connections are healthy. Because it syncs continuously, a misconfiguration can propagate deletions — understand versioning and use it.
