Telegraf is a widely used open-source metrics-collection agent (from InfluxData) with a large plugin set, feeding time-series databases and monitoring stacks. Telegraf ships regular releases plus security fixes; as an agent deployed broadly with access to systems and credentials, keeping it current matters.

For admins Telegraf is usually rolled out across many hosts, so update it through your configuration management for consistency. Its input plugins often use credentials (to databases, APIs, SNMP), so protect the configuration and apply least privilege. Keep it current for plugin and security fixes. Because it's widely deployed, a vulnerability or misconfiguration has broad reach — but its job is read-mostly telemetry, keeping risk moderate. After updating, verify that metrics still flow to your backend and no plugins broke. Check plugin compatibility after larger jumps.
