Vector at a glance

Vector is a widely used, high-performance open-source observability data pipeline (from Datadog) for collecting, transforming and routing logs, metrics and traces. Vector ships frequent releases plus security fixes; as an agent or aggregator in the telemetry path handling data and credentials, keeping it current matters.

For admins Vector is often deployed as a fleet (agents plus aggregators), so update it through your deployment tooling for consistency. Its configuration references sources and sinks with credentials — protect it and enable TLS on the connections. Keep it current for component and security fixes; because it processes telemetry from many sources (some untrusted), keep the components you enable minimal. Its own API/health endpoints belong on a protected network. After updating, verify that data still flows end to end and no transforms broke — Vector's config can change behaviour subtly across versions. Check component compatibility after larger jumps. Track releases; patchletter surfaces new Vector versions so fixes land across the fleet.
