Zeek at a glance

Zeek (formerly Bro) is a widely used open-source network security monitoring framework, generating rich logs and analysis from network traffic for threat detection and forensics. Zeek ships regular releases plus fixes; as software that parses untrusted network traffic, keeping it current matters.

For admins Zeek is a powerful analysis platform often customized with scripts and packages, so upgrades want care — test scripts and the package set, since the scripting language and APIs evolve. Because Zeek parses untrusted traffic, protocol-analyzer vulnerabilities are a real vector — apply security fixes promptly. Keep the Zeek package manager (zkg) content current too. After updating, verify that Zeek runs, logs are produced and any custom scripts still load — a silently broken monitor loses visibility. Capturing traffic has privacy and legal implications — scope it to authorized networks. It pairs with SIEMs for alerting. Track releases; patchletter surfaces new Zeek versions.
