Ansible at a glance

Ansible is a widely used open-source automation and configuration-management tool, driving provisioning, deployment and orchestration without agents. The project ships regular releases of both the community package and the core engine plus collections; security fixes appear periodically.

For admins the version story has two parts: the ansible-core engine and the collections, which move independently — pin both for reproducibility. Upgrades can bring deprecations and changed module behaviour; read the porting guides and test playbooks in a non-production inventory first. Ansible often holds privileged credentials and reaches every managed host, so protect the control node, use Vault for secrets, and apply least privilege. After upgrading, run playbooks in check mode where possible. Track the support window of your ansible-core version.
