Autodesk AutoCAD at a glance

Autodesk AutoCAD is a commercial CAD application for technical drawing and design in two and three dimensions. It is used across many industries, from architecture and construction to mechanical engineering and electrical or plant design, and often forms the basis for exchanging drawings in the DWG format. Additional specialised toolsets extend its scope with industry-specific features.

AutoCAD is released as an annual edition and delivered through a subscription. Autodesk distributes updates and new editions through its own Autodesk Access service and the user account rather than through a freely accessible feed. For administrators this means keeping installations current through the managed channels and aligning any move to a new annual edition with the add-on modules and templates in use. An overview of available editions helps to keep track of the estate and to schedule updates in a coordinated way across the team.
