Citrix Workspace Environment Management (WEM) is a management layer for environments running Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops. It shortens logon times, controls resource consumption on the session hosts and manages user profiles and policies centrally. Administrators of large virtualization and DaaS estates use it to keep performance and user experience stable across many concurrent sessions.
WEM is maintained as part of the Citrix portfolio in named editions; new versions bring feature additions, compatibility with current operating systems and bug fixes. Because the component reaches deep into logon and profile handling, updates should be planned and first tried in a test environment.
Before switching, review the relevant release notes: they list supported platforms, the steps required for infrastructure services and changes to the agent and console. This makes it possible to judge whether an update can be done during operation or needs a maintenance window.
