Proxmox VE at a glance
Proxmox VE is an open-source virtualization platform from Vienna, combining KVM VMs and LXC containers with clustering, software-defined storage and built-in backup — popular from homelabs to SMBs. Proxmox ships regular point updates via APT across its enterprise and no-subscription repositories.
For admins the key choices are the repository (enterprise vs no-subscription) and, in clusters, rolling node-by-node updates while keeping quorum. Take a config backup before larger upgrades and read the release notes; the jump between major versions (tied to the Debian base) is a planned migration with a documented path. Keep the bundled Ceph version compatible with the Proxmox release, and verify VM/backup behaviour after updating.
