CiviCRM is an open-source constituent relationship management platform used to manage contacts, memberships, donations, events, and communication campaigns, primarily by non-profits, NGOs, associations, and educational institutions. Administrators run it either as a standalone PHP web application or as an extension within existing CMS environments such as Drupal, WordPress, or Joomla, which introduces update dependencies tied to the underlying CMS version.

New releases follow a regular monthly cadence, accompanied by release notes documenting new features, bug fixes, and occasionally database schema changes. Out-of-cycle security releases are published as needed and should be applied promptly, since security advisories are only issued for supported version lines.

When updating, administrators should verify compatibility with the installed CMS version, the PHP runtime, and any installed extensions, as these are maintained independently of the core codebase. A full database backup prior to upgrading is recommended, since version jumps often introduce irreversible schema changes. Reviewing the release notes before each update helps identify breaking changes early and plan maintenance windows accordingly.
