Nextcloud at a glance

Nextcloud is a leading self-hosted file-sync and collaboration platform — a privacy-friendly alternative to public cloud storage, widespread in SMBs and the public sector. Nextcloud ships regular releases plus security fixes; as an internet-facing system holding sensitive files, timely updates matter.

For admins updates run through the built-in updater or the CLI (occ), with database migrations on upgrade — back up the database and data directory first. Apps have their own cycles and are the usual stumbling block; check compatibility before larger jumps and don't skip major versions. The PHP version must match the Nextcloud release.
