Consul at a glance

HashiCorp Consul is a widely used service-networking platform providing service discovery, health checking, a key-value store and service mesh. Consul ships regular releases; following the license change to the BUSL, it shares the HashiCorp ecosystem context, and careful updates matter as core infrastructure.

For admins Consul is often critical plumbing many services depend on, so upgrades follow a documented, staged path — upgrade servers before clients, mind the Raft protocol and autopilot, and snapshot the state before starting. In a cluster, roll members in order to keep the quorum. Consul's API and UI belong on a protected network with ACLs and TLS enabled (gossip encryption too) — an open Consul is a serious risk. After upgrading, verify service discovery, health checks and the mesh. Track the version and its support window; patchletter surfaces new Consul releases so security fixes aren't missed.
