Debian at a glance
Debian is a rock-solid, community-run Linux distribution and the base for many others (including Ubuntu). Debian ships stable releases roughly every two years with several years of security support (plus LTS), and security updates flow continuously through the repos.
For admins Debian stable is a conservative, dependable server base. Updates within a release are routine (apt; unattended-upgrades for security). The jump to the next stable is planned and testable (change the repos, dist-upgrade). Track the end-of-support dates per release — after regular support, Debian LTS extends coverage, then a migration is needed. Before major upgrades, read the release notes for changed defaults and removed packages, and check third-party repositories. Debian's stability makes it a low-maintenance, long-lived base.
