Ubuntu Server at a glance
Ubuntu is one of the most widely used Linux distributions, on servers, desktops and in the cloud. Canonical ships LTS releases every two years (five years of standard support, extendable) plus interim releases; security updates flow continuously through the repos.
For admins the LTS line is the right base for production. Updates within a release are routine (apt / unattended-upgrades for security patches). The jump to the next release (do-release-upgrade) is planned and testable. Track the end-of-standard-support date per release — after that you need Ubuntu Pro/ESM or a migration. Livepatch reduces kernel reboots. Before major upgrades, check third-party repositories and application compatibility. Kernel and toolchain move faster on interim releases, so weigh stability against currency.
