Docker Desktop at a glance
Docker Desktop bundles the Docker engine, CLI and a management UI for Windows and macOS developer machines. Docker ships frequent releases; the app prompts for updates and, in managed setups, is deployed via the enterprise installer.
For admins Docker Desktop runs on developer endpoints, so keep it in the patch cycle — it ships the engine and its components, which occasionally get security fixes. Mind the licensing terms for larger organizations. Updates are usually straightforward (install the new version); check that your images and Compose files still behave after larger jumps. On managed fleets, deploy and update it centrally and configure settings (resource limits, registries) via policy. For servers, the standalone Docker Engine is the right tool rather than Desktop.
