GitHub Desktop at a glance

GitHub Desktop is a graphical Git client for Windows and macOS that makes cloning, branching, committing, merging and pull requests usable without the command line. In companies it ends up not only with developers but also with technical writers, data teams and admins who maintain configuration repositories. For IT it is therefore a widely installed endpoint application with access to source code and credentials.

The application is open source and ships on a short cadence. Besides stable builds there is a beta channel whose pre-releases are tagged publicly as well; production installations should follow the stable channel. Packages bundle their own Git build and an Electron runtime, so updates regularly carry security fixes for those components too.

When updating, the installation model matters: by default the program installs into the user profile and updates itself, which can bypass central package management and approval processes. Anyone controlling distribution should disable self-updating or supply packages afterwards. It is also worth reading changes around sign-in and token handling, because existing accounts often need reauthorisation after skipping several builds.
