Helm at a glance

Helm is the de-facto package manager for Kubernetes, deploying applications from templated, versioned charts. Helm ships regular releases; as the tool that renders and applies manifests to a cluster, keeping it and your charts current matters.

For admins Helm's version should stay compatible with your Kubernetes version — check that before upgrading clusters or Helm itself. The bigger version story is the charts: chart and image versions carry the actual security posture, so track upstream chart releases and update deliberately, reviewing values changes. Helm holds release state in-cluster; a helm diff before upgrades avoids surprises. Charts can template secrets — keep them out of version control in plain form. After upgrading Helm or a chart, verify the release rolled out cleanly. Pin chart versions for reproducibility and track Helm's support window.
