Home Assistant is the leading open-source home-automation platform, integrating a vast range of devices and services. Home Assistant ships monthly releases plus security fixes; as a hub with control over physical devices and often reachable remotely, keeping it current and access-controlled matters.

For admins the monthly cadence is brisk and updates occasionally include breaking changes to integrations — read the release notes, back up first (Home Assistant has built-in backups), and don't blindly auto-update a production hub. Never expose it directly to the internet — use a reverse proxy with TLS, strong authentication and two-factor, or remote access via VPN/Nabu Casa. Add-ons and custom (HACS) integrations carry their own supply-chain risk — vet and update them. After updating, verify that critical automations and devices still work. Track releases; patchletter surfaces new Home Assistant versions.
