K3s at a glance
k3s is a lightweight, certified Kubernetes distribution (from Rancher/SUSE), popular for edge, IoT and homelab clusters. k3s ships releases tracking upstream Kubernetes across several channels plus security fixes; as a cluster control plane, careful updates matter.
For admins k3s follows Kubernetes' upgrade discipline: don't skip minor versions, upgrade the server before the agents, and check the deprecation/removed-API list against your manifests. The bundled components (containerd, the datastore, Traefik) come along with the release. Back up the datastore (SQLite or etcd) before upgrades. The API belongs on a protected network with RBAC. Its small footprint makes k3s easy to run but the same Kubernetes lifecycle rules apply — track the end-of-life dates per minor version and plan upgrades ahead. After upgrading, verify workloads and add-ons.
