Kubernetes at a glance
Kubernetes is the dominant container orchestration platform, running workloads across clusters from edge to cloud. The project maintains several minor versions at once with regular patch releases; as the control plane for whole clusters, timely patching and careful upgrades are essential.
For admins the update rules are strict: never skip more than one minor version per step, upgrade the control plane before the nodes, and check the deprecation/removed-API list against your manifests. Back up etcd before larger upgrades. The API server and etcd belong on a protected network with RBAC and TLS. Track the end-of-life dates per minor version — Kubernetes moves fast, so plan upgrades ahead. Managed and self-hosted distributions (k3s, RKE2, EKS/GKE/AKS) have their own cadences on top; follow theirs.
