LAN Messenger at a glance
LAN Messenger is a chat program for local networks that works without a central server and without an internet connection. The clients find each other on the network and exchange messages, files and group chats directly. Administrators use it in offices, schools and isolated networks where cloud services are not allowed or a server is not worth the effort. Versions exist for Windows, macOS and Linux.
The project is open source and publishes its versions on GitHub. Besides the stable releases there is a continuously built test version that is not meant for everyday use.
When updating, the main task is to plan the rollout to the workstations, because there is no central update mechanism. As the clients work by broadcast on the same network, as many machines as possible should be on the same level. The firewall rules for the chat ports stay in place but should be checked after an update in case the installation path changes.
