Matrix Synapse at a glance
Matrix Synapse is the reference open-source homeserver for the Matrix protocol — a decentralized, self-hostable real-time communication network. Synapse ships regular releases plus security fixes; as a federated, internet-facing server handling untrusted traffic, prompt patching is essential.
For admins Synapse federates with other servers, so it processes untrusted input from across the network — apply security releases promptly. Updates run database migrations — back up the PostgreSQL database first, and read the release notes, since Synapse has ongoing performance and schema changes. Keep it behind a reverse proxy with TLS, and mind the registration settings (avoid an open, abusable server). After upgrading, verify that login, messaging and federation work. Synapse can be resource-hungry; monitor it. The connected clients (Element and others) update separately. Track the version and its support status; patchletter surfaces new Synapse releases so security fixes aren't missed.
