Mattermost is a widely used open-source, self-hosted team-messaging platform — an alternative to public chat services, common where data control matters. Mattermost ships regular releases (ESR and standard) plus security fixes; as a collaboration system holding sensitive conversations, hardening and timely updates matter.

For admins the ESR (extended-support) line is the calmer choice for production. Updates run database migrations — back up the database and the file store first, and follow the documented upgrade path without skipping required stops. Mattermost belongs behind TLS with strong authentication (SSO, two-factor) and off the open internet unless deliberately hardened. Integrations, plugins and bots carry their own access — review them. After upgrading, verify login, messaging and integrations. Track the version and its support window, and apply security releases promptly; patchletter surfaces new Mattermost releases.
