OpenStack at a glance
OpenStack is an open-source platform for building and running infrastructure as a service. Through a set of cooperating services for compute, block and object storage, networking, identity and a dashboard, it provisions virtual machines, storage and networks that can be driven via API, command line or web interface. Administrators use OpenStack mainly for private clouds in their own data centres and as the foundation for public cloud offerings.
The project follows a fixed, coordinated release cadence with named series that ship several core components together. An upgrade therefore does not affect a single program but a whole set of services and needs careful planning: component ordering, database migrations and API compatibility all matter. It is advisable to move only to the next supported series at a time, to review the configuration and policy changes of each release in advance, and to rehearse the upgrade in a test environment before it reaches production nodes.
