Parula at a glance

Parula is an open-source desktop communications client that combines email, chat, video conferencing, calendar, contacts and files in a single application. It is built by a team that includes former Thunderbird developers. For sysadmins it is interesting as a locally running alternative to classic mail programs: messages and appointments are processed on the device, without an additional cloud service sitting in between. Mailboxes connect over IMAP and JMAP alongside common calendar and contact protocols, so several accounts from different providers can be gathered into one interface.

The application ships as a standalone program for Windows, macOS and Linux and appears in quick succession with new builds and fixes. Because the project is still young, the feature scope and stability of individual components differ noticeably; anyone running Parula in production should test new builds before rolling them out and review the release notes for security-relevant changes to mail and account handling.

Before updating, it is advisable to back up the local profile data, as data formats may still change between early builds. For controlled operation it helps to track the stable builds separately from the ones marked as development snapshots.
