Perplexity at a glance
Perplexity is a cloud-based AI assistant that answers questions in natural language. To do so, the service combines a live web search with large language models and cites the sources behind its answers. It is used mainly for research and quick summaries; besides the web interface there are companion apps for desktop and mobile, but they all rely on the same vendor-run infrastructure.
For administrators, it is worth noting that this is a purely online service: there is no self-hosted edition and no locally installable server component that would need updating on its own. New capabilities are rolled out on the server side and communicated through a running change log.
Anyone adopting the service in an organisation focuses less on classic updates and more on account and access management, data-protection and contractual questions, and on which data is sent to the provider.
