PyCharm at a glance

PyCharm is JetBrains' development environment specialised for Python. It combines context-aware code completion with static analysis, refactorings, a graphical debugger and integrated test execution. For web development it includes support for common frameworks, along with tools for virtual environments, package management, databases and version control.

Beyond plain Python work, PyCharm supports scientific and data-driven workflows, for example through notebook integration and charts. The environment is available in a free and a paid edition that differ mainly in professional web and database support; it is now shipped as a single unified distribution.

PyCharm is updated through its own updater or through package sources. Because JetBrains maintains its products on a fixed yearly cadence with several intermediate releases, it is worth reviewing the release notes before larger jumps – particularly for changed default settings, plug-in compatibility and runtime requirements.
