QGIS is an open-source GIS desktop application used by government agencies, engineering firms, research institutions, and businesses to process and visualize geospatial data. System administrators often manage QGIS as a key desktop tool for end users or as a server component (QGIS Server) powering web mapping services, making a structured update process important to maintain compatibility with plugins and data formats.

The project follows a fixed release cycle with regular minor releases and a parallel Long-Term Release (LTR) line that offers extended support for production environments. Major versions are published on a multi-month cadence, complemented by bugfix releases addressing stability and security issues. For server deployments, the LTR line is generally recommended since it introduces fewer disruptive changes to APIs or plugin interfaces.

When updating, administrators should verify that installed plugins remain compatible with the new version, as third-party extensions do not always update immediately. It is also advisable to review changelogs for changes to data processing, rendering, or underlying libraries such as GDAL and PROJ, which can affect existing projects and workflows. For server installations, dependencies on the underlying operating system should also be checked before upgrading.
