Synology Chat Server is the messaging package for Synology NAS devices, used in small and mid-sized environments as a self-hosted alternative to cloud chat services. Messages, channels, file attachments and accounts stay on the appliance; sign-in uses DSM user management and can be tied to LDAP or a directory service. Users connect through a browser or through desktop and mobile clients.

Synology maintains the package separately from the DSM operating system. Updates arrive at irregular intervals through Package Center, sometimes adding features, sometimes fixing bugs or security issues. Larger DSM upgrades usually bring a matching package build with them, and older package versions stop running on the newer system release.

Before updating, check the compatibility notes against the installed DSM release and remember the client side: desktop and mobile apps are maintained separately and often need to follow a server update. Back up the package data first, then verify login, channel history and notifications. If the service is reachable from the internet, review the reverse proxy, certificate and access restrictions as well.
