Tuwunel at a glance
Tuwunel is a Matrix homeserver written in Rust, designed as a resource-efficient alternative to Synapse. It fully implements the Matrix specification and is therefore compatible with common Matrix clients, bridges, and bots. System administrators use Tuwunel to run their own self-hosted communication platform for teams or communities without relying on the more resource-intensive reference implementation. The project is the official successor to a previously known fork and is actively maintained by a community.
Releases are published via GitHub, where automated build pipelines regularly publish new versions, sometimes multiple times per month. In addition to binary packages, container images and packages for common Linux distributions (such as a Debian/Ubuntu repository, a Fedora/RHEL repository, and AUR) are available.
When updating, administrators should watch for database schema changes, configuration file changes, and notes about breaking changes in the release notes, since the project is still under active, fast-paced development. Before updating production environments, a database backup and a review of the changelog are recommended, as federated Matrix servers can be particularly sensitive to incompatible protocol changes.
