UTM at a glance

UTM is a popular open-source virtual-machine host for macOS (and iOS), built on QEMU, letting users run Windows, Linux and other systems — including on Apple Silicon. UTM ships regular releases plus fixes; as software running guest operating systems, keeping it current matters.

For admins UTM bundles QEMU, so its security fixes often track QEMU's — keep it current for guest-isolation and stability fixes, and source it officially (the vendor build, or the Mac App Store edition). The version story also includes the guest OSes you run — keep them patched. Take VM snapshots before larger updates. Because it runs untrusted guests with virtualization access, treat it like any hypervisor on a workstation: current software, trusted images.
