VMware Workstation Pro at a glance
VMware Workstation Pro is Broadcom's desktop hypervisor for Windows and Linux. Administrators and developers run virtual machines straight on their workstation — for test installs, training labs, malware analysis, or keeping legacy systems alive when there is no room for them in the data centre. The formerly separate entry-level edition, Workstation Player, has been folded into this product.
Broadcom ships Workstation as major releases with maintenance builds in between; downloads and release notes live on the support portal and the Techdocs site and require an account. Because a hypervisor works close to the kernel, updates regularly include fixes to graphics, USB and networking components — the very areas that have produced guest-to-host escape vulnerabilities in the past.
Before updating, check the host operating system and its drivers: newer builds often require a more recent kernel or Windows build, and on Windows the hypervisor tends to clash with Hyper-V and memory integrity. Shut down running virtual machines cleanly and consolidate snapshots first, then refresh VMware Tools inside the guests afterwards.
