Xcode at a glance
Xcode is Apple's development environment for every Apple platform and, in companies that build their own apps, a heavyweight but maintenance-hungry part of the Mac estate. Apple ships stable releases plus release candidates and betas year-round — only the stable line counts for production use.
Two practical concerns for admins: size (several gigabytes per version, frequently multiple versions side by side on one machine) and the coupling to macOS — a new Xcode major regularly requires a current macOS release. Anyone running build machines therefore plans the upgrade together with the OS and the CI configuration.
On the security side the bundled toolchains are what matters; Apple lists fixed vulnerabilities in its security releases. On build servers the installed version belongs in the inventory.
