Alpine Linux at a glance

Alpine Linux is a tiny, security-oriented distribution, extremely popular as a minimal base image for containers. Alpine ships stable releases plus continuous security updates through its repos; its small footprint reduces the attack surface but the update discipline still applies.

For admins Alpine most often appears as a container base — so the version story is really about rebuilding images to pick up fixes (apk upgrade during build), keeping the base tag current, and pinning for reproducibility. Alpine uses musl libc rather than glibc, which occasionally surfaces compatibility differences — test applications on it. Each stable release has a defined support window; track it and move base images forward before it ends. For standalone installs, apk manages updates. Alpine's minimalism is a security asset, but a stale minimal image is still a stale image — keep it rebuilt.
