Kali Linux at a glance

Kali Linux is a Debian-based distribution for penetration testing, forensics and security auditing. Administrators and security teams run it as an assessment platform, as a live system from USB, as a virtual machine, under WSL or on ARM devices, because the relevant tooling ships packaged and preconfigured.

Kali is a rolling release: packages arrive continuously from the repository, and on top of that the project publishes named snapshots several times a year with fresh images, updated desktop environments, a newer kernel and a revised tool set. Existing installations do not move forward through an installer but through the package manager; the images mainly matter for fresh installs and VM templates.

When updating, the repository signing key is the classic stumbling block: once it expires, apt fails with signature errors and the key has to be replaced. It is also worth verifying image checksums, taking a snapshot before larger upgrades, and testing your own tool chains afterwards, since tools are replaced or dropped between snapshots.
