KDE neon at a glance

KDE neon pairs an Ubuntu LTS base with packages the KDE community builds itself. The underlying system stays on a long-term-supported Ubuntu release, while the Plasma desktop, KDE Frameworks and the KDE applications arrive shortly after upstream publishes them. In organisations the User Edition is the usual choice for workstation images; testing, unstable and developer editions exist for staging and QA work.

neon has no conventional version scheme — it is a rolling distribution, and installed systems pick up changes continuously through the package manager. What actually gets published are freshly built installation images, distinguished only by their build timestamp. A new image therefore matters mainly for fresh installs, golden images and mass deployment rather than for machines already in the field.

Two things deserve attention when updating. Moving the Ubuntu base to a new LTS release is a real distribution upgrade and needs testing for drivers, third-party repositories and locally built packages. Larger Plasma jumps can also require changes to user profiles, autostart entries and graphics drivers. Verify checksum and signature of any downloaded image before rolling it out.
