openSUSE Leap at a glance
openSUSE offers two faces: Leap, a stable release aligned with SUSE Linux Enterprise, and Tumbleweed, a rolling release with always-current software. Both receive continuous security updates through the repos; the choice sets the update rhythm.
For admins Leap behaves like an enterprise distribution — periodic releases, planned upgrades, a defined lifecycle — while Tumbleweed rolls continuously and expects frequent, small updates (with snapshots via Btrfs/snapper as a safety net). YaST and zypper manage updates. For Leap, track the end-of-life per release and plan the jump to the next; for Tumbleweed, update regularly and rely on snapshots to roll back a bad update. Before larger changes, back up and check third-party repositories. Pick the variant that matches your appetite for currency versus stability, and patch on that cadence.
