ShiftOS at a glance
ShiftOS is the mobile operating system of the SHIFTphone range from SHIFT, a German, sustainability-focused manufacturer. It is based on Android and shipped per device as firmware -- either with certified Google services or as a de-Googled, AOSP-based variant. Owners of the devices receive security and feature updates for their particular model.
The updates are closely tied to individual devices: each model follows its own firmware level, linked to the Android base it currently supports. New editions are announced by the manufacturer and usually installed through the device itself.
In practice this means installing offered updates promptly and following the manufacturer's notices for the relevant model -- especially because on mobile devices security updates act directly on the attack surface. Before larger jumps of the Android base, backing up your data is advisable.
