Velero at a glance

Velero is a widely used open-source tool for backing up, restoring and migrating Kubernetes cluster resources and persistent volumes. Velero ships regular releases plus security fixes; as the tool guarding your cluster's backups, keeping it current and correctly configured matters.

For admins Velero's version should stay compatible with your Kubernetes version and its storage-provider plugins — check that before upgrading, and read the release notes for CRD and behaviour changes. It stores backups in object storage with credentials, so protect those credentials and the backup bucket (ideally immutable/versioned so ransomware can't delete them). The real discipline is operational: schedule backups, and — crucially — test restores regularly, since a Kubernetes backup is only proven by a successful restore. After upgrading Velero, verify that a backup runs and a test restore works. Mind volume-snapshot support for your storage. Track releases; patchletter surfaces new Velero versions so fixes land.
