Wear OS by Google at a glance
Wear OS by Google is Google's smartwatch operating system and runs on watches from several manufacturers. It links the watch to a paired smartphone and delivers notifications, health and fitness tracking, and access to Google services and Play Store apps. For administrators it mainly matters as a managed endpoint within a mobile device fleet.
The platform is built on Android; larger feature releases arrive on a yearly cadence, with security and maintenance updates in between. Distribution is device-specific: when a given watch receives a new version is decided by its manufacturer, so timing and scope vary considerably from one model to another.
Before updating, ensure sufficient battery and a stable Wi-Fi connection; many updates only run while the watch is paired with its phone. Check the compatibility of watch faces and installed apps, and review each model's support window, since older watches stop receiving new versions.
